Take the crappy shotguns from those guys! give them a thick ceramite armor, power-axes and back mounted automatic grenade-launchers. would rip most enemies to bits

Agreed, also I might be wrong, but aren't ogryns the 'ardest species in the galaxy, I mean they're so fucking strong and one headbutted an ork boss to death, surely they could beat any other unit in close combat.

Also Imperial guard has no good units for close combat. Many enemies win this way, they get close up and then massacre the guardsman who has no armor or training required. Lasguns have no stopping power and they are often underequipped with any other weapons, plus have a paper-thin armor.
Even if they only equip ogrin with riot shields, full body armor and some large power weapons (axe or mace) and turn them into fully close range fighters it would be still way more effective than current strategy.

I don't want to offend their fans, but Imperial Guard used the same tactics and strategy as in WW2, often worse.
